Whoa! Wannabe wranglers can still saddle up and head to desert foothills around Tucson for a horseback ride. Galloping through arroyos (dry washes) or loping through the desert is done at only a few dude ranches. But, saddling up and exploring the desert on a well-trained, gentle horse allows for a lot of sightseeing. The good news for recently minted dudes – those sporting unscuffed leather cowboy boots and clean Stetsons – is that short guided rides are easy on the backside. No experience is necessary for a scenic trail ride; just don drop the reins to photograph a stately saguaro.
Most outfitters charged about $20 an hour, and some stables offer longer rides, sunset opportunities and hayrides. Its a great way to explore the desert around Tucson.
